Solar Panel Cleaning Methodology

Cleaning solar panels can be accomplished primarily by two methods, depending on the size and complexity of the array or arrays, and the types of panels that make up those arrays. For larger arrays, If cleaned by more heavy duty methods such as pressure washing, the supporting structure should be able to take the weight of a person walking around on them. Waste water reclamation and capture must generally be employed as most arrays are installed on building roofs and the roofs drains are often plumbed to storm water and current environmental rules prohibit discharge of wash water and detergents even if that used wash water doesn’t appear very dirty and the detergents are "eco-friendly”. The rules are clear: “Only Rain Down the Drain”. If pressure washed rotary surface cleaners are used in combination with heated water and a detergent may be incorporated into the machine’s fresh water supply. Rotary surface cleaners are crucial, as they eliminate the risk of damage to the panels by the machine operator.

For smaller arrays, or those with lesser soiling, or for arrays that are not designed to have any appreciable amount of weight on them, something akin to window cleaning tactics may also be employed. Generally this method will yield a lower cost of work, and less resources to employ... The panels are soft brushed or mopped with traditional window cleaning heads with detergents formulated for removal of soils common on solar panels, and then rinsed with very advanced and industry specific water filtration systems which produce “ultra purified water” which dries with absolutely no spots or residue. This ultra purified water, is so devoid of mineral content that is dissolves deposited minerals and hard water deposits on contact, leaving perfectly clean glass or composite surfaces, thus maximizing energy returns…
